The correct exercises for horse riding will undoubtedly make you a better rider. As a professional showjumper, I can confirm that when I use a proper training program, I feel tighter in the saddle, more fluid with the horse’s movement, and experience less muscle fatigue. This allows me to ride longer and more effectively.

These benefits apply to all forms of horse riding, not just showjumping. Being fit and supple is crucial for maintaining a good seat. While spending time in the saddle is ideal, not everyone has multiple horses to ride. Therefore, substitute training is essential for rider fitness.

I have found that a combination of yoga and Pilates is ideal. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to yoga and Pilates classes tailored to horse riders. However, I discovered two ladies online who offer free instructional videos specifically designed for horse riding. They have a vast range of videos, allowing you to do the classes from the comfort of your own home.

Here are two of my favorite routines that I use almost every day. Once you become familiar with the routines, it becomes easier to follow without constantly looking at the screen.

Pilates

First is the Pilates class, which I do in the morning before starting my day. It’s only 16 minutes long, so there’s no excuse not to fit it into your morning routine. This class focuses on physical conditioning, strengthening all the muscles needed for riding. The benefits of this are enormous; a strong rider is usually a more effective rider.

Yoga

Next is the yoga session, which I do in the evenings after a hot shower. Your body is warmer after a shower, making stretches more effective and beneficial. The more supple you are, the more fluid you can be with your horse’s movement. This not only looks better but also minimizes injury or wear and tear to both you and your horse. This session is also just 15 minutes long, making it easy to fit into your routine.

I invite you to check out these two ladies’ YouTube channels. They offer a plethora of videos to choose from based on your needs. Select a few, get to know them, and incorporate them into your daily routine. You won’t regret it, and your horse will thank you for it. Plus, they’re absolutely free.

Incorporating the correct exercises for horse riding into your routine will enhance your riding skills, making you a more effective and confident rider.
