Three of the England women's football team will officially start London Marathon 2022, which is taking place in just over a week

With just over a week to go until London Marathon 2022, it’s all we can talk about. Now that months of marathon training are done, we’ve been getting into the technicalities of tapering for a marathon, discussing the marathon kit that our editor, Esther, will be wearing, and thinking about on-the-day race pacing.

Now we have another fantastic talking point to add to the list. It’s just been announced that our Euro-winning football team will be starting the London Marathon 2022 this year. Three Lionesses from the team that smashed this years Euros will be there. Captain Leah Williamson, as well as England Women’s record goal-scorer Ellen White and Jill Scott MBE.

“I feel incredibly honoured to be helping to start the 2022 TCS London Marathon,” said Ellen White. “I have always admired the dedication and mentality needed to take on the marathon. The atmosphere is something I’ve always wanted to experience. I hope everyone has an amazing day and huge congratulations to every person taking part this year.”

Extra trivia: before her decorated football career, Jill Scott was a talented runner. She even previously won the Mini London Marathon. But this comes as no surprise to us. We recently learned some fascinating football facts, including that the average female football player runs around 10K per match.

“This will bring back some special memories for me!” she said. “Crossing the finish line first on The Mall was an amazing feeling. Part of the joy of our success this summer was hearing how it inspired young people to get out and get involved in sport. The Mini London Marathon has the same power.”

Previous starters of the London Marathon include Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Andy Murray, Helen Glover and Heather Stanning. We’re thrilled that the Lionesses now are joining that list, after their incredible achievements this year and the inspiration that they provide for all young people.
