Dmitry Bivol is aiming for a December return after undergoing left elbow surgery, with a third fight against Artur Beterbiev remaining his preferred option.

The Ring’s InsideRingShow reported that Bivol underwent the procedure last week. Sources told Mike Coppinger that the preferred options are another fight with Beterbiev or a title defense against Callum Smith.

Bivol and Beterbiev split their first two meetings across 2024 and 2025, leaving the score even. Beterbiev claimed the first bout by majority decision to become the undisputed light heavyweight champion. Bivol answered with a majority decision victory in the rematch to regain the division’s top spot.

A third fight remains one of boxing’s biggest attractions. Smith, however, is waiting for his opportunity if negotiations with Beterbiev fail to produce an agreement. The former world champion has earned his place near the front of the line. He remains one of the division’s leading contenders.

Several leading contenders continue waiting for the title picture to move forward.

Bivol is coming off a 12-round unanimous decision win over IBF mandatory challenger Michael Eifert on May 30 in a fight that drew criticism from many fans, who questioned why the title defense took priority over a third meeting with Beterbiev. Bivol had already given up the WBC belt rather than defend it against mandatory challenger David Benavidez, ending his reign as the undisputed light heavyweight champion.

With the WBC title no longer in his possession, some observers felt there was little reason to risk another delay by facing Eifert instead of completing the trilogy with Beterbiev, who has now waited more than a year for the rubber match.

The elbow procedure follows an earlier back injury that interrupted Bivol’s schedule before he worked his way back to the top of the division. His camp expects him to resume training once doctors clear him, giving him enough time to prepare for another championship appearance.

Another fight with Beterbiev would finally settle the score after two closely contested meetings. Smith also offers Bivol a chance to satisfy his title obligation before looking toward another marquee fight in 2027.
