Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland touch gloves at the start of UFC 328 headliner

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier has given his thoughts on a possible rematch between Sean Strickland and Khamzat Chimaev.

In the main event of UFC 328, Sean Strickland shocked the world when he managed to defeat Khamzat Chimaev and become a two-time UFC middleweight champion. It came at the end of a bitter build-up to the bout, with both men going at each other pretty aggressively in interviews and on social media.

Afterwards, though, Strickland seemed to reveal that it was all part of an act to create interest in the fight, and that he didn’t really have too much of a problem with Chimaev.

Daniel Cormier, meanwhile, feels like that was a mistake on Strickland’s part.

Cormier’s view on Strickland/Chimaev rivalry

“They talked about killing each other and all this stuff, and then that was buried,” Cormier said in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel.

“I thought to myself, ‘Okay, this thing’s over.’ Because you cannot sell a rematch or any type of rivalry between these two because you almost pulled the curtain back.

“Generally, guys, we would all jump on this,” he continued, pointing to the recent social media exchange between the former opponents. “We’d be like, ‘Oh my goodness! They’re at it again! Two dudes that hate each other are going to fight again,’ if we did not get that moment in Newark.

“It was unnecessary. You don’t have to bury the hatchet. When he (Strickland) tells you that it’s not real, ‘I was selling a fight,’ you believe him.

“I would watch those two fight every day of the week… But to the general fan, how do we get them to believe it? They’re not gonna be able to sell it on a blood feud like they did last time.”
