The Diamondbacks announced this evening they’ve recalled left-hander Kohl Drake to start tonight’s game against the A’s. Reliever Juan Burgos was optioned to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.

This is the second time that Drake has been called up this season. He spent three days on the active roster in June but didn’t make it into a game. That had left the 26-year-old southpaw as a phantom ballplayer until tonight. Drake will go against A’s righty Jack Perkins for his debut.

Drake was one of three prospects whom the D-Backs acquired from Texas in the Merrill Kelly deal last summer. He ranked 13th among the organization’s prospects at Baseball America over the winter but has fallen off their top 30 with a tough year in Triple-A. The 6’5″ lefty has an earned run average close to 7.00 across 66 1/3 innings. He has a career-low 19.3% strikeout rate while walking 10% of opposing hitters.

Arizona needed someone to step into Zac Gallen’s spot in the rotation. They’ve already turned to Mitch Bratt and Brandon Pfaadt to join Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez. Righty Jose Cabrera would’ve been the logical choice, but he hasn’t spent 15 days in the minors since being optioned on July 9. They could’ve recalled him as the corresponding move when Gallen first went on the injured list, but they brought up Bratt at that time instead.

Cabrera could come up the next time this rotation spot is due. Michael Soroka is working back from a glute strain but will probably need at least another couple weeks. Arizona is within a half-game of the Wild Card picture and weighing the rotation needs against holes in the bullpen, at first base, and in the outfield.
