The Cubs have designated right-hander Yosver Zulueta for assignment, per a team announcement. His spot on the roster goes to newly acquired left-hander David Peterson, who came over to Chicago in a trade with the Mets.
Zulueta only came to the Cubs ten days ago. He’d been designated for assignment by the Mariners, who flipped him to Chicago for cash. This is the third DFA of the calendar year for the 28-year-old right-hander, who’s gone from Cincinnati, to Seattle, to Chicago. He’ll now be traded or placed on outright waivers within the next five days.
Despite changing hands multiple times and spending time on multiple clubs’ 40-man rosters, Zulueta hasn’t pitched in the majors this season. He’s totaled 23 2/3 major league frames, all coming with the Reds in 2024-25. In that time, he’s posted a 5.32 ERA with a sharp 24.8% strikeout rate but a subpar 10.9% walk rate. Zulueta generates plenty of grounders (54%) and averages better than 97 mph on his four-seamer, although it’s his sinker (96.2 mph average) that headlines a four-pitch arsenal. He also mixes in an 87 mph slider and a seldom-used 89 mph changeup.
More to come.
