The Cubs have designated right-hander Bryse Wilson for assignment. Fellow righty Jake Woodford will take his spot on the roster. Wilson was claimed off waivers from the Phillies last week. He appeared in two games with Chicago.

Wilson was part of Friday’s 17-run debacle against the Cardinals. He was hammered for seven earned runs in relief of lefty David Peterson. It was a disappointing follow-up to his scoreless outing as a bulk reliever in his first game with the club. Wilson will now head back through the DFA process.

A team in need of innings could step in and grab Wilson, just like the Cubs did. He was a reliable innings eater as recently as 2024 with the Brewers. The veteran righty struggled mightily with the White Sox last year. Wilson had to settle for a minor league deal with Philadelphia. He was released from the agreement in early June, only to re-up on a new contract. Wilson made just one appearance with the Phillies, tossing two scoreless frames.

Woodford has spent the campaign in the Brewers organization. He came over in a minor trade with the Rays shortly before Opening Day. The 29-year-old broke camp with the team and appeared in 16 games as a multi-inning relief option. Woodford notched a 6.94 ERA across 23 1/3 innings. He was designated for assignment in June, but passed through waivers and wound up back in the Brewers’ system on a minor league deal. He opted out of that agreement on Thursday and signed with the Cubs this morning.

Similar to Wilson, Woodford has operated as both a starter and a reliever in the majors. He covered three innings on a trio of occasions with Milwaukee this year. Woodford was strictly used out of the bullpen with the Diamondbacks last season, but he made seven starts between the White Sox and Pirates in 2024. He’ll join a pitching staff that recently lost starters Edward Cabrera and Ben Brown. Chicago acquired Peterson to help out the rotation, with mixed results so far. The club is also missing several relievers, including high-leverage options Daniel Palencia, Phil Maton, and Hunter Harvey.
