Cristian Romero looked set to lead Tottenham into a new era when he signed a fresh contract last August, but he's now certain to leave amid interest from Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid.

The Argentina international had just been named captain by Thomas Frank after playing a major role in Spurs’ Europa League triumph.

His deal now ran until 2029, with one of Tottenham’s most important players apparently committing his peak years to north London.

Less than 12 months later, the picture has changed completely.

Spurs endured a disappointing domestic season, Frank lost his job and Roberto De Zerbi eventually led them away from relegation danger.

Romero also criticised the club’s hierarchy, while injuries and suspensions disrupted his campaign.

The World Cup-winning defender still made 32 appearances and scored six goals across all competitions last season, and while those numbers were impressive, his availability and discipline remained sources of frustration.

A summer departure has since become widely expected.

Tottenham have already prepared for major changes in defence, with Jan Paul van Hecke arriving from Brighton, while experienced Argentina international Marcos Senesi joined on a free transfer from Bournemouth.

De Zerbi can also call upon Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso. Make no mistake, losing Romero would still remove Tottenham’s captain and leader in the dressing room, but Spurs are no longer short of alternatives.

Inter Milan initially appeared to have taken control of the race.

The Italian club have held lengthy discussions with Romero’s representatives and Tottenham, with reports claiming the clubs have moved towards an understanding of around £40 million.

A return to Serie A would be familiar territory for Romero, having previously starred for Genoa and Atalanta before joining Tottenham on loan in 2021, and Inter need a commanding defender after making significant changes to their back line.

However, Atlético Madrid have now threatened to disrupt those plans.

Marca reports that Diego Simeone’s side have revived their long-standing interest and are preparing an offer for the 28-year-old.

The Spanish club tried to sign Romero last summer but would not satisfy Tottenham’s valuation, but his subsequent renewal contained an important escape route.

According to Marca, the defender inserted a 'special clause' allowing Atlético, Real Madrid or Barcelona to sign him for £52 million.

It is described as a preferential mechanism for those three clubs, showing that Romero wanted to preserve the possibility of playing in Spain.

Atlético may not need to activate it in full, with Tottenham prepared to negotiate, and Marca say Atlético are planning an opening proposal worth around £26 million to £30 million.

That would fall short of Inter’s reported position, but Romero’s preference could transform the contest.

Romero is said to want Atlético and the opportunity to work under Simeone. Inter appear further ahead with Tottenham, but still need the player’s approval.

Spurs therefore face a crucial decision.

They can accept the strongest financial package or allow their captain to push for Madrid.

Atlético still need to find common ground with Tottenham, yet Romero’s clause, personal ambition and affection for Simeone have opened a route that appeared closed only weeks ago.
