Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe trash talk between undisputed women’s heavyweight champion Claressa Shields and WMMA GOAT contender Cris Cyborg is heating up ... even if the chances of them fighting are lower than ever.
Shields just defeated Lani Daniels in a largely one-sided beatdown (highlights here) for her second win of the year. While the event did big numbers at the gate, the fight underscored how there isn’t much competition for “The GWOAT” at higher weight classes.
If she’s looking for a big fight against an equally big opponent, MMA fans have an obvious answer: Cris Cyborg, who has held every major women’s MMA title in her weight class and is now climbing her way up the Super Welterweight rankings in boxing. Unfortunately, Shields seems uninterested in fighting Cyborg.
"Cris Cyborg ain't vocal about shit. That bitch is a hater and she's f*cking ugly.
I don't even respond to her because I know I already whooped Cris Cyborg's ass in sparring, very bad... Cris Cyborg cannot box."@Claressashields responds to Cris Cyborg pic.twitter.com/G5Tjm6zsfZ
“That b—ch is a hater, and she’s f—king ugly,” Shields said on the Ariel X Ade boxing show. “Don’t nobody care about her, she’s old, she’s washed up, and she’s a hater. That’s it. She’s seen me getting all this shine, and she’s mad it’s not her. The other day, she was just calling out Oshae Jones. She just wants to talk about fighting a world champion. And then soon as somebody reaches out to her and say, ‘Hey, do you wanna fight? Let’s make something happen,’ she got all these different stuff that she wanna bring up.”
Shields is still angry that Cyborg turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia to box her back in 2023 and considers Cris all talk and no walk.
“She wanted me to go down to 147 to fight against her and then put on some twelve ounce gloves or some bullcrap like that,” Shields said. “Like, she’s doesn’t really wanna fight, and I hate when people mention her. Like, she’s not even undefeated up in MMA. Go over there, fight against those girls who you fight against and do your own thing.”
“You over here fighting against girls who are trash in boxing, who the commission wouldn’t even okay to get inside the ring with me for a sparring match. That’s who Cris Cyborg is fighting against in boxing. And she just mentioning champion names to try to get some type of [response]. She wants you to respond to her. So I don’t even respond to her.”
Besides, Shields already beat Cyborg ... in a 2017 sparring session.
“I know I whupped Cris Cyborg’s ass in sparring,” she said. “Very bad. I should’ve knocked her ass out like I like I thought to. Only reason I didn’t was because we was friends. But Cris Cyborg cannot box.”
It didn’t take long for Cyborg to respond to Shields.
“Claressa out here talking about practice,” Cyborg wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Nobody talking about 147 anymore. I’m at 154, undefeated, and ranked number 8 in the world as a boxer.”
“You show up to weigh ins looking like Mike Tyson warming up for a Netflix fight with Jake Paul and now YOU talking about looks?! You couldn’t cut the ring, weren’t able to get her out, then gassed and lost the 10th round. I’m too old but you trying to call out 47 year old Laila Ali who been retired 15 years ago.”
“Claressa Shields out here calling me old and ugly in interviews, but she’s stepping on the scale looking like an old dusty leather sofa,” Cyborg concluded.
Cyborg has said she wants to fight Shields but isn’t willing to take a pay cut to do it. That means someone has to pay her more than she’s making to defend the PFL featherweight superfight title in order to get this fight off the ground.
Here’s hoping that happens, because we’re definitely interested in seeing these two finally scrap in the ring for real.
