Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayConor Benn’s drawn appearance has Chris Algieri questioning what he will have left for Ryan Garcia on September 12. With roughly two weeks remaining before their fight at 147, Algieri believes getting down in weight is already taking a toll.
“You see how much muscle he’s lost to make the weight. His neck is a different size,” Algieri said to Fight Hub TV. “But again, we’re also two weeks out still.”
Those observations come from someone who felt Benn’s power. Benn knocked Algieri out in the fourth round in December 2021, giving him firsthand experience of the puncher he now sees looking considerably smaller.
The timing adds to his unease. There is still training to complete before fight week, on top of the substantial muscle loss he describes. Returning from middleweight may require a longer reduction, but reaching 147 is only useful if Benn retains the strength to compete there.
The Prograis fight gives that concern a reference point. Algieri recalls Benn looking rough on the scale at 149 pounds. His objection to dismissing another two pounds is that they come at the end of an already extensive reduction.
That challenges the idea that getting close to welterweight proves Benn can comfortably make it. The final pounds still have to come from somewhere. Algieri’s description raises doubts about how much more Benn has available to lose without sacrificing something he needs in the ring.
Is Benn still bringing his weight down or trying to hold himself close to the limit? Algieri admits he does not know his current weight. That leaves another question unresolved: how long is Benn spending in the condition he describes?
Against Ryan, the consequences extend beyond sustaining an attack. Benn needs to close distance to apply pressure, bringing him into range of Garcia’s left hook. If Algieri’s concern about reduced punch resistance proves justified, getting caught coming forward becomes an even greater risk.
Physical aggression also needs something behind it. Getting close is only the first step. Benn has to land hard enough to make Garcia uncomfortable and keep working once he gets there. If reducing his size takes away some of that force, he risks doing the difficult work of getting inside without making it count.
Effort alone will not solve that. Algieri credits Benn’s willingness to push and sees Garcia’s inconsistent performances as an opening for an upset. But relying on an opponent to have an off night is less convincing if your own preparation raises questions about the qualities needed to capitalize.
Appearance cannot establish how Benn will perform. Making 147 would answer the question on the scale. It would not settle Algieri’s concern about how much of the fighter he remembers will be left.
