Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayUFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen says Gina Carano’s MMA comeback was a failure hours before her fight vs. Ronda Rousey.
Women’s MMA pioneer Gina Carano’s first fight in 17 years lasted mere seconds, as UFC Hall of Famer Ronda Rousey submitted her with her patented armbar last weekend in Los Angeles. After months of anticipation, Rousey made quick work of Carano to win her first MMA fight in almost 11 years.
While Rousey returned to retirement after the Carano fight, Carano didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to fighting again after undergoing a significant physical transformation in recent years. But UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen left fight week with more questions than answers about Carano and her team.
Carano weighed in at 141 lbs for the 145-pound bout with Rousey at last Friday’s weigh-in. To Sonnen, this shows a lack of professionalism on Carano’s part.
Chael Sonnen: Gina Carano ‘didn’t care’ about beating Ronda Rousey
In a recent episode of Smash Cast, Sonnen didn’t hold back when asked for his thoughts on Carano’s short-lived MMA comeback.
“Gina Carano shows up to the weigh-in at 141 pounds. I spoke to Gina one time in my life, and it was very pleasant; she treated me very respectfully and kindly…but this is a reality: Gina weighed in five pounds less than she needed to. Contracted weight of 145…and she got a one-pound allowance. They ask her ‘Why?’, and that is beyond unprofessional by everybody on that team,” Sonnen said of Carano.
“Whoever the coach is, the strength/conditioning coach, to get their athlete five pounds underweight, failed at their job…you can teach that to a nine or ten-year-old. If you’re underweight, you don’t need to cut more weight…then she comes into a fist fight and doesn’t throw any punches, and doesn’t care! She could’ve quickly spun that, her days in Hollywood got taken from her, very unfairly. But she could’ve used a paycheck like this, and a Gina Carano vs. Holly Holm fight would’ve been really compelling…
“But not when you do it like that,” Sonnen continued on Carano. “You had an opportunity, and her team failed her. Those women botched the spot.”
As of this writing, Carano hasn’t responded to Sonnen’s remarks.
