Secretary Allison signs resolution celebrating inclusion through Special Olympics

A small group gathered recently at headquarters in Sacramento to commemorate the support CDCR has shown Special Olympics across California.

Celebrating diversity is a core value for all employees under the CDCR umbrella. This was recognized by the Special Olympics Northern California chapter when they presented CDCR with a Champions of Inclusion award.

After accepting the award, Secretary Allison signed a Resolution encouraging ongoing support for Special Olympics. For years to come, CDCR will continue support through locally coordinated institution activities, headquarters-sponsored events and the Our Promise Campaign.

The last Resolution was signed in 2016 by then-Secretary Scott Kernan.

Athlete shares importance of program

“I was born with mild cerebral palsy and had a stuttering problem. In school, learning was tough for me because I did not have a tutor. I have been bullied in school. In 1975 while in school I discovered Special Olympics and my life changed for the good,” said athlete Jonathan Sparks.

He also serves on the Special Olympics Northern California Law Enforcement Torch Run Executive Committee.

“Special Olympics is my ministry to show that people with intellectual disabilities can do anything given a chance to try. Special Olympics is about family, inclusion and helps to show the world what life should be like,” he said.

25 years of Special Olympics law enforcement support

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR).

Historically, this has been a big event for CDCR employees and the incarcerated population, joining hundreds of local law enforcement agencies across the state to support Special Olympics.
