Carlos Adames can lose his WBC middleweight title on November 17 without giving his opponent a chance to win it. The sanctioning body has approved his request to fight above 160 pounds, with defeat carrying the penalty of his championship becoming vacant.

That leaves mandatory challenger Meiirim Nursultanov waiting for a title fight the WBC had already ordered. Adames gets to pursue another opportunity first, while Nursultanov risks losing the chance to challenge the reigning champion.

According to the WBC ruling reported by The Ring, Adames must face Nursultanov after the non-title bout. The winner of their middleweight title fight must then meet interim champion Jesus Ramos. Adames’ November opponent has not been announced.

The vacancy condition gives Adames something to worry about, but it does little for Nursultanov. If the champion loses, taking away his belt won’t give the challenger back the opportunity to beat him.

Nursultanov could instead end up fighting another available contender for the vacant championship, depending on what the WBC orders. That would still give him a route to the belt, but a less recognizable opponent could mean less attention and potentially a smaller payday.

There’s a difference between winning a vacant title and taking it from an established champion. Nursultanov has worked toward the latter, only to watch the WBC approve a fight that could remove Adames from the equation entirely.

Adames recently signed with Zuffa Boxing, and a fight above middleweight gives him room to explore other options. Nursultanov receives no comparable benefit from the exception. He waits, with no guarantee that the title opportunity will look the same afterward.

The WBC will review Adames’ mandatory obligations at its November 8–13 convention in Acapulco, Mexico.

Adames has permission to take the risk. Nursultanov is left dealing with the consequences of a fight he has no part in.
