Asked to settle one of boxing’s longest-running fantasy debates, Froch first explained why he would have enjoyed seeing Calzaghe frustrate the American.

“That would have been one hell of an interesting fight. I’d have liked to have seen Joe Calzaghe set about Andre Ward and beat him on points. Slap him up and get him out of there because Ward’s style is annoying but effective,” said Froch on his channel.

“He’s very good at what he does. He knows how to win, but he’s not a fan favorite. It’s not a good style to watch; he knows what to do to win, but he ducks low below the waist, he holds on and gets his head on your chest. He ties you up.”

Froch then gave his actual prediction.

“It would have been a great fight, but I’ve probably got to say that Andre Ward doesn’t know how to lose. I think he would have beat Joe Calzaghe. It would have been one hell of a fight; it would have been close, but I pick Andre Ward to win that one.”

It’s an opinion that carries more weight than most because Froch experienced Ward’s style firsthand. Ward outboxed him over 12 rounds in the 2011 Super Six World Boxing Classic final, neutralizing Froch’s aggression to unify two super middleweight world titles.

Calzaghe, meanwhile, retired with a perfect 46-0 record after ruling the division for more than a decade. His relentless punch volume, awkward rhythm, and exceptional conditioning helped him defeat the likes of Chris Eubank, Mikkel Kessler, Bernard Hopkins, and Roy Jones Jr. before retiring in 2008.

Ward finished 32-0 and built his legacy on adaptability as much as talent. He could box at range, fight inside, and make elite opponents uncomfortable with clinches, positioning, and subtle defensive tactics. Those same traits frustrated Froch and led him to conclude they would also have been enough to edge Calzaghe in a fight many fans still debate today.
