Right-hander Bryse Wilson elected free agency after being outrighted by the Brewers, relays Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Milwaukee designated him for assignment on Saturday.

Wilson has bounced around this season. He had very brief big league stints with the Phillies and Cubs before signing with Milwaukee shortly before the All-Star Break. Wilson made six appearances for the Brewers, working 13 2/3 innings of four-run ball. He struck out 10 without issuing a walk and only allowed one home run. Wilson had one ugly outing in San Francisco but was otherwise solid in low-leverage work for skipper Pat Murphy.

Milwaukee turned to Wilson for three innings on Friday, which likely would’ve ruled him out for the weekend. That often leads to a DFA when a mop-up pitcher can’t be optioned to Triple-A. Wilson has done the best work of his career in Milwaukee, as he also had decent numbers for the Brewers between 2023-24. He has a 3.37 ERA across 93 appearances with the Brewers but has an ERA above 5.00 for every other for which he’s pitched (excluding his one-off appearance with Philadelphia).

It stands to reason the Brewers would have interest in bringing Wilson back on a minor league deal, but he’ll have a chance to explore the market and see if another team is willing to plug him directly onto the MLB roster. Wilson has a 4.24 ERA across 23 1/3 MLB frames this year, albeit with a below-average 18% strikeout rate. He punched out 23.5% of batters faced but allowed more than six earned runs per nine with the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate earlier in the year. Wilson worked as a starter in the minors but has mostly pitched in long relief as a big leaguer.
