“Listen, I’m an old man. I don’t know what the thinking is. I don’t have any goddamn idea,” Arum told Fight Freaks Unite. “We went out and tried to make this fight for him because he shot his mouth off that this was the fight that he wanted. And when we made the fight he doesn’t want it.”

Arum said he remains “totally perplexed” by Davis’ decision. He also noted that Davis has not publicly explained why he declined the offer.

The fight never progressed beyond negotiations despite Top Rank’s efforts to put the deal together. The company had pursued the matchup after Keyshawn spent months targeting Haney following his move to the welterweight division.

Arum also revealed that Top Rank’s proposal exceeded the guaranteed amount Keyshawn would have received under the WBO purse bid. The sanctioning body’s 75-25 split would have paid Davis approximately $2.14 million if Top Rank had won the bidding, but Arum said the company increased its offer to $3 million in an effort to secure the fight.

Until Davis explains why he rejected the offer, Arum’s remarks leave one of boxing’s biggest unanswered questions intact. A title shot against Haney was available; Top Rank says it put more money on the table than the mandatory terms required, yet the fight never came together.
