Orgo-Life the new way to the future

In late September, New York Mets infielder Bo Bichette and outfielder Juan Soto both seemed to hint that Bichette will elect to stay with the Mets and not opt out of the three-year, $126M deal he signed to join the National League East club last offseason.

For his latest "Mets Beat" newsletter, Anthony DiComo of the MLB website addressed the Bichette-sized elephant that continues to hover over the franchise.

Will Bo Bichette opt in, stay with Mets?

"The answer to this is probably yes, but until Bichette actually puts pen to paper, it will remain an open question," DiComo wrote about whether or not Bichette will opt in to stay with the Mets. "Earlier this season, as Bichette struggled to adjust to New York, it seemed plausible that he could opt out of the final two years and $84M on his contract to seek a new deal on the open market. Bichette eventually settled into his new home, but his overall numbers -- just a .702 OPS in 160 games, plus below-average defensive work at third base -- left much to be desired."

Specifically, Bichette slashed .260/.312/.390 with 18 home runs and 78 RBI in his first season with the Mets. While Baseball-Reference shows he produced solid offensive numbers over his final 99 games of the campaign, that stretch of play may not be enough to earn him the type of deal he presumably would want from a different team.

Additionally, Bichette seemed to grow more comfortable as both a New York player and as a leader for a Mets team that featured promising youngsters such as outfielders Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing. Add in that the Mets reportedly "aim to compete next season," and Bichette could ultimately decide the grass isn't greener away from Queens regarding 2027.

Bo Bichette has millions of reasons to "likely" do this?

"If he opts out," DiComo added, "Bichette will find it impossible to eclipse his current deal’s $42M average annual value. Even if he does wish to opt out for non-financial reasons, Bichette can still do so a year from now at age 29, presumably off a better platform season. For all those reasons, he is likely to stay. Bichette’s decision is due five days after the World Series ends."

This year's World Series is scheduled to end on Halloween at the latest. It remains to be seen whether Bichette will confirm his plans for 2027 before November gets underway.
