The Toronto Blue Jays have made a trade with an American League rival, the Los Angeles Angels, acquiring right-handed starting pitcher Jose Soriano in exchange for Blue Jays top prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti and right-hander Angel Rivero. 

Soriano has put up a solid campaign with the Angels this season, sporting a 9-6 record with a 3.29 ERA, 127 strikeouts and a 1.25 WHIP. The 27-year-old started his MLB career with the Angels and has held a career 3.72 ERA with them since 2023. 

This season, his fastball velocity has ranked in the 83rd percentile at 96.7 mph, as well as boasting a ground-ball rate of 52.3 percent that sits in the 90th percentile. 

Overall, Soriano provides the Blue Jays with a controllable asset who remains under club control through the 2028 season, while also supplying them with high-velocity pitching and a proficient ground-ball-inducing pitcher. 

Analyzing the Blue Jays-Angels trade

While the Blue Jays have given up a highly touted prospect/shortstop with Arjun Nimmala, they've acquired an affordable starter with Soriano, who is on a one-year, $2.9 million contract and will enhance the Blue Jays rotation as a high-strikeout pitcher. 

Soriano is also pitching in his prime, and his arsenal contains an 85 mph knuckle curve that's generated a ton of swing-and-miss with a 46.1 percent whiff rate. 

In addition to Nimmala, the Angels will be getting two minor leaguers with 24-year-old outfielder Eddie Micheletti and 19-year-old right-hander Angel Rivero. Across 93 games with Double-A New Hampshire, Micheletti is slashing .251/.347/.454 with 14 home runs, and Rivero contains a fastball that tops at 94 mph and also contains significant armside run. 

On Sunday, the Blue Jays also acquired starting pitcher Jameson Taillon and traded veteran starter Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs. The Blue Jays' projected rotation for the rest of the season will consist of Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, Soriano, Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer and Taillon.
