The Big East has its new leader.

The conference is reportedly set to hire ex-MLB executive Tim Brosnan as its next commissioner, per ESPN.

A native New Yorker, Brosnan will succeed the retiring Val Akerman, who will step down at the end of August following 13 years at the helm.

Brosnan — who grew up on the Lower East Side — joined MLB in 1991 and was instrumental in the launch of both MLB Network and the World Baseball Classic.

A graduate of both Fordham Prep and Fordham Law School, Brosnan spearheaded negotiations for all of MLB’s national media rights, was named by ownership to develop and launch the MLB Network, and was president/CEO of Major League Baseball Enterprises, which held the business of all 30 clubs.

Brosnan was regularly named one of the “50 Most Influential People in Sports” by the Sports Business Journal and one of the ‘100 Most Powerful People in Sports’ by The Sporting News.

But after losing out to Rob Manfred to be MLB commissioner, he left in 2014 to pursue other business ventures.

Now he’ll be in the business of running the Big East, a basketball-centric conference in a college landscape increasingly dominated by football.

Brosnan was the pick over finalist Kerry Kenny, the Big Ten COO, according to ESPN.

But his experience with business and television — and the business of television — will come in handy in leveraging the league’s strengths.

The Big East has claimed four of the last 10 national titles in basketball.

UConn won consecutive championships in 2023 and ’24 before reaching this year’s NCAA championship game against eventual winner Michigan.
