Robbie is the Assistant Editor at Football FanCast.

Having graduated from the University of Exeter in 2020, Robbie spent time working as an intern or in freelance positions across a variety of sites, including at 90min, producing news and feature content related to clubs in the Premier League, EFL, SPFL and in Europe.

Robbie subsequently spent over a year working as a news, features and opinion writer at Football Faithful, primarily focused on the Premier League and Manchester United, in particular.

After beginning life at Football FanCast as part of the company's academy set-up in 2022, Robbie has risen through the ranks to now taking on the role of Assistant Editor since October 2023, having also been part of the Exclusives team in the past.

Across the last few years, Robbie has covered Manchester United, Celtic and Rangers on a regular basis, alongside a raft of other clubs, boasting an in-depth knowledge of the Premier League, EFL and Scottish football in general.

Robbie is a Manchester United fan, but also has a particular fondness for both Celtic and Wycombe Wanderers, taking in a multitude of home and away games for the Chairboys over the last two decades.

Glasgow Rangers aren't hanging around, it would seem, in the transfer market, with further deals expected to follow after the stunning capture of Lawrence Shankland.

Plucking the Scotland striker from a potential title rival represents a real coup for those at Ibrox, with the 30-year-old signing a two-year deal to kickstart a potentially seismic summer for the Danny Rohl's side.

Indeed, there have since been reports that the Gers are readying a bid for Dundee starlet, Luke Graham, following another fine Premiership season for the 22-year-old, while a return to Glasgow has been mooted for Wrexham star, Josh Windass.

The 32-year-old forward was a target for Rohl in January, as too was Sunderland's Dan Neil, with the 24-year-old again under consideration amid his expiring contract at the Stadium of Light.

The former Black Cats skipper could freshen up Rangers' midfield ranks, although he isn't the only target on the agenda.

It was reported earlier this week that the Old Firm side were actually closing in on a deal for Neil, the Englishman set to be a free agent after spending the last six months on loan at Ipswich Town.

A permanent move to Portman Road does not appear on the cards, and while Coventry City are also in the mix for his signature, it is Rangers who may well be at the front of the queue.

Rohl is clearly a fan, having pursued a deal in the winter, although the German might also have his eye on an even more notable, dream target too.

As per SportsBoom, Rohl wants to trying and make a move for Southampton midfielder, Shea Charles, with the EFL Championship side currently in the midst of chaos following the 'Spygate' saga that plagued their play-off push.

The Gers boss previously managed Charles at Sheffield Wednesday and is said to be pushing for a reunion, while the 22-year-old is also 'open to the possibility' of working under the 37-year-old again.

A possible issue could well be the rival interest in the former Manchester City man, however, with the likes of Sheffield United also in the frame, according to the report.

Why Charles would be a better signing than Neil for Rangers

The prospect of landing Neil on a free makes that deal almost a no-brainer, yet in terms of pure talent and potential, Charles seemingly has the higher ceiling.

Indeed, in the view of EFL expert, Ali Maxwell, the Northern Ireland international is a "future £50-£60m" player, having already cost the Saints a fee of around £15m back in 2023.

A difficult start at St Mary's was followed by a standout 2024/25 campaign on loan at Hillsborough under Rohl's watch, with Charles starting 42 games in England's second tier.

That run of games saw him chip in with one goal and five assists, having also created five 'big chances' and averaged 1.3 key passes per game, a fine return for a player operating primarily in a deep-lying midfield role.

For comparison, Neil's 2024/25 season at Sunderland, in which he skippered the club to promotion, saw him score twice, yet register only three assists, create only three 'big chances' and average just 0.7 key passes per game.

Out of possession too, Charles is far superior as a ball-winning, all-action presence, protecting the backline expertly with 3.9 tackles and interceptions won per game on average.

Again, for context, that was significantly ahead of what Neil achieved, while operating in a similar role, the Sunderland academy graduate averaging just 2.9 tackles and interceptions, having also won just 51% of his total duels, well below Charles' 59% average.

As for the current campaign, the latter man's return to Southampton saw him chip in with six goals and assists, even while starting just 22 games, having scored the goal that looked set to take the club to Wembley earlier this month, prior to their expulsion.

In Neil's case, he was swiftly cast aside after Regis Le Bris' side moved into the Premier League, while even his loan stint with Ipswich didn't exactly pay off, having started only eight games for the Tractor Boys.

Of course, there might be the hope of bringing both Neil and Charles into the mix at Ibrox, particularly if the former arrives on a free, yet if it is a straight fight between the pair, there can only be one winner.

Charles - who has already made 33 appearances for his country at senior level - has also previously impressed under Rohl, ensuring he could slot in nicely to what will hopefully be an improved, new-look Rangers side next season.
