Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDavid Benavidez is expected to face Michal Cieślak on December 12 after Noel Mikaelian chose a Ring cruiserweight championship fight against Jai Opetaia over their planned unification bout.
Discussions are also underway for Benavidez to meet the winner of Opetaia-Mikaelian.
“Expect David Benavidez to fight Michal Cieslak on Dec. 12 with ongoing conversations for Benavidez to fight winner of Sept. 12 Ring Magazine cruiserweight championship fight between Jai Opetaia and Noel Mikaelian,” Coppinger stated on X.
The proposed date gives Benavidez an opportunity to strengthen his grip on the cruiserweight division. He owns the WBA and WBO belts after stopping Gilberto Ramirez in the sixth round in May. Cieślak holds the WBC interim title and may compete for the full belt if the sanctioning body strips Mikaelian.
Cieślak provides a solid replacement, though he falls short of elite status. The 37-year-old Polish contender has stopped 22 opponents, yet he lost both times he challenged for a full world title. Ilunga Makabu defeated him on points in 2020, and Lawrence Okolie clearly outboxed him two years later.
Benavidez owns significant advantages in hand speed, combination punching, and work rate. Cieślak carries enough power to punish mistakes, but the pairing gives Benavidez a safer challenge than facing Opetaia directly.
Claims about fighting the September winner require skepticism. Early discussions do not guarantee a signed contract, especially against Opetaia, the leading threat at cruiserweight.
Benavidez has shown little public interest in that matchup. Most of his attention has remained fixed on Canelo Alvarez and lucrative opportunities at light heavyweight. Opetaia has pursued the biggest cruiserweight fights without receiving a commitment from Benavidez’s camp.
Beating Cieślak may give Benavidez a third cruiserweight belt, depending on the WBC’s ruling. It does not ensure a fight with Opetaia next year. The December date may become a manageable belt grab while Benavidez’s team continues discussing a far more dangerous unification that never reaches the contract stage.
