Mikel Arteta has already added Christos Tzolis to his forward options.

That signing gave Arsenal another natural threat from the left and a replacement for Leandro Trossard, but it did not end their search for elite attacking quality.

The champions still want a forward capable of transforming games at the highest level, particularly when opponents deny them space around the penalty area.

Gabriel Martinelli’s expected departure has created further room, with Arsenal agreeing the outline of a deal with Al Hilal worth £49 million plus £7 million in potential bonuses, although the Brazilian must still approve the move.

Martinelli was omitted from Arteta’s opening two matchday squads, and his potential club-record sale would provide a significant late boost to Arsenal’s budget and remove another player from an already crowded forward group.

There is uncertainty through the middle as well, with Gabriel Jesus also available for the right deal as he enters the final year of his contract.

Bukayo Saka supplies control from the right, Eberechi Eze can create between the lines and Tzolis brings speed on the opposite flank, but the missing piece could be a forward who links those qualities together.

Arsenal are therefore not simply looking for extra depth, they appear willing to redesign the attack around one outstanding player if the opportunity emerges.

That player could be Alvarez.

The Independent now report that the Atlético attacker is becoming more receptive to joining Arsenal.

Barcelona has been his first choice, with family and lifestyle considerations important, but that route is highly complicated, and Atlético released a fresh statement today saying there is zero chance they will sell to the Catalans.

Atlético have no appetite for strengthening a domestic rival and want the uncertainty ended before the weekend.

Arsenal have remained patient, and The Independent say their pitch to Alvarez is that he will be the heart of their new forward line whilst returning him to his best position.

Alvarez has occasionally been asked to work away from the areas where he causes the most damage under Diego Simeone. Arteta could instead give him freedom to operate centrally, press from the front and drop into spaces behind the main striker.

The Gunners may also possess a useful bargaining tool.

Atlético are searching for attacking reinforcements and reportedly admire both Gyokeres and Jesus. One could potentially be included alongside cash, lowering the immediate cost and giving Simeone a replacement.

Alvarez’s changing stance represents genuine progress.

Arsenal were previously waiting for Barcelona’s pursuit to collapse, but they may now have a player who is beginning to see the Emirates Stadium as a destination in its own right.

Andrea Berta and co will still need to fork out a mammoth transfer fee and match or better his £200,000-per-week take home in La Liga, but Alvarez is at least beginning to consider a return to England.
