Iegor Golub says Joshua showed championship resolve after the early knockdown, but insists elite heavyweights will punish the same defensive lapses.

Anthony Joshua earned a second-round stoppage of Kristian Prenga, but trainer Golub saw a more important story. Golub praised Joshua’s recovery while warning that the defensive errors behind the first-round knockdown cannot follow him into bigger heavyweight fights.

The Ukrainian trainer detailed his reaction on social media after watching Joshua survive an early knockdown before recovering to end the bout in the second round. While Golub avoided identifying a specific rival, his warning left little doubt that a much tougher test awaits.

“It’s not mistakes that define a champion. It’s how he responds to them. A few moments passed after the first knockdown, and I glanced at the clock: 2:36 remained in the round. Those were probably the longest two and a half minutes of my life. I imagine they were for AJ as well. But he pulled himself together, showed his character, and weathered the storm. There was a lot at stake. I don’t see much point in commenting on the knockout itself. The power in his hands is incredible, and every single day we work to make that weapon as sharp as it can possibly be. A very big fish won’t forgive a single mistake. Anthony won’t forgive a single mistake too.”

Inside the ring, Joshua found himself in immediate trouble when Prenga split his guard with straight right hands over the jab. Prenga then moved away from the punch that created the damage, choosing to exchange hooks instead. That decision gave Joshua the opening he needed to plant his feet and land the shots that finished the fight.

The victory keeps Joshua in position for another major heavyweight fight, but Golub’s comments suggest the performance also exposed problems that require immediate attention. Elite heavyweights are unlikely to abandon the punch that is working, leaving far less margin for error if Joshua carries the same defensive flaws into his next bout.
