Originally, Cruz was supposed to face Albert Bell in an IBF lightweight title eliminator. When Bell withdrew after taking another fight on short notice, Montoya stepped in with little time to prepare. Although Montoya had never been stopped in 32 previous professional bouts, Cruz’s superior speed and precision immediately put him on the defensive.

Cruz (7-1, 4 KOs) quickly took control with his faster hands and cleaner punching, repeatedly beating Montoya to the target before the Mexican veteran could get his offense started. Montoya (24-8-1, 14 KOs) absorbed plenty of punishment while trying to press forward, but Cruz consistently found openings with sharp combinations.

Late in the second round, Cruz landed a crushing right hand that dropped Montoya heavily. Montoya beat the count, but he returned to his feet on unsteady legs and looked fortunate that the bell sounded moments later.

Cruz picked up where he left off in the third, unloading accurate combinations that further battered the short-notice opponent. A series of clean punches left Montoya badly compromised, prompting the referee to step in and halt the bout. Reports afterward indicated Montoya suffered a broken jaw during the contest.

The performance gave Cruz the convincing rebound he was looking for after dropping a majority decision to Raymond Muratalla in January, the first defeat of his professional career. Rather than easing back with a cautious outing, Cruz produced a dominant stoppage against a durable opponent who had never previously been halted.

The victory may also mark Cruz’s final appearance at lightweight. He has indicated that he intends to campaign at 130 pounds, where fresh opportunities await.
