While super featherweight offers title opportunities, it lacks the same depth of marketable opponents. Emanuel Navarrete remains one of the division’s biggest attractions, but beyond him the financial upside drops considerably. O’Shaquie Foster is an accomplished champion, yet he has not generated the same commercial appeal.

Lightweight presents a different picture. William Zepeda, Floyd Schofield, Abdullah Mason, Sam Noakes, Lucas Bahdi and Lamont Roach Jr. all offer recognizable opponents if Cruz chooses to campaign primarily at 135 pounds. The division provides multiple avenues to major fights instead of relying on a single marquee name.

Remaining at lightweight also keeps Cruz within range of attractive fights one division higher. A rematch with Raymond Muratalla remains a possibility if both eventually campaign around 140 pounds, even though Muratalla recently dismissed the idea by insisting he beat Cruz “fair and square.” Purse offers have changed plenty of minds over the years.

Keeping both divisions available may be the smartest business decision Cruz can make. If the biggest opportunities at 130 fail to materialize, he will not be trapped in a division with fewer recognizable opponents. Instead, he can continue pursuing the deeper lightweight scene before deciding later whether a move to 140 or even 147 offers greater rewards.
