Altra Experience 2 Review

The Altra Experience Wild 2 is a trail running shoe featuring a 4mm drop, a significant departure from Altra’s traditional focus on zero-drop trail runners. It features a large toe box and thick midsole cushioning, making it a good option for hikers who want to transition to a trail runner, but aren’t ready to embrace a zero-drop fit.

  • Heel-to-toe drop: 4mm
  • Outsole: Altra MaxTrac
  • Weight: 11.3 / 323g – men’s 10.5US (women’s also available)
  • Wide-Sizes: No
  • Cushion: High
  • Stack height: 28mm/32mm
  • Support: Neutral
  • Footshape: Standard
  • Fit: True to size.
  • Pros: Stable, comfortable cushion, large toe box
  • Cons: The Tongue is not gussetted, allowing debris to enter

Fit and Comfort

What struck me immediately about the Experience Wild 2 was the comfort. Altra’s hallmark toe box allows your toes to spread naturally, providing relief for anyone accustomed to narrow, restrictive trail runners, hiking shoes, or hiking boots. This extra space helps reduce the risk of toe blisters, black toenails, and other foot issues caused by shoes that are too cramped.

The upper is designed to be both secure and flexible:  it hugs the midfoot and heel nicely without creating pressure points or causing hot spots. Even after several hours of hiking, my feet felt comfortable, with no uncomfortable rubbing or pinching, particularly in the areas above the toes and behind the heel. However, the tongue of the shoes is not gusseted, which can allow debris to enter. If you use this shoe, you’ll want to use gaiters with it when hiking off-pavement.

A well-cushioned midsole complements the shoe’s fit. The Experience Wild 2’s stack height is moderate, offering good protection from rocks and uneven surfaces without feeling overly thick or losing touch with the trail beneath you. The rocker geometry is somewhat muted, with curvature limited to the forefoot and toes.

Performance and Traction

Performance-wise, the Experience Wild 2 features a rugged lug pattern designed to grip a wide variety of surfaces. The lugs are spaced far enough apart to clear mud, and on rocky terrain and loose gravel, the rubber compound provides a good grip. The shoes still use Altra’s Maxtrac sole, which has been in service for many years, but is not as grippy as the Vibram MegaGrip soles that are now popular, and used on their zero-drop trail runner, the Lone Peak 9+

I tested these shoes in various conditions, including dry trails, muddy forests, and rocky outcrops. In every situation, the Experience Wild 2’s outsole delivered reliable traction. For technical trails with roots and rocks, the underfoot protection is just right: you can feel the contours of the ground without getting jabbed by sharp edges, despite the lack of a rock plate. Overall, there’s a good balance between cushioning and ground feel.

Durability and Build Quality

The materials for the shoe’s uppers don’t sacrifice breathability or flexibility. The upper mesh keeps your feet cool while being tough enough to resist tears from sticks or brush along the trail. Reinforced overlays provide extra protection in high-wear areas, such as the toe and sides, without making the shoe too stiff or heavy. While the EVA midsole has a lively feel out of the box, you can expect the cushioning to degrade over time, a common occurrence among all trail runners.

The toe kicks and overlays provide adequate protection but I wouldn’t wear them on more technical trails. The toe kicks and overlays provide adequate protection, but I wouldn’t wear them on more technical trails.

Protection and Versatility

The toe bumpers provide a good defense against stubs and impacts without feeling cumbersome. However, I wouldn’t recommend using these shoes on more technical trails, where you’re likely to experience lateral impacts along the sides or even the top of the toe box.

What’s particularly impressive is how versatile the Experience Wild 2 is. While it’s designed for trails, it transitions seamlessly to other surfaces, such as gravel roads or even pavement, if your walk includes mixed terrain. This makes it a good choice for hikers who want one do-it-all shoe for hiking in different environments. It’s also light enough to pack as an all-purpose travel shoe for hiking trips.

Weight and Ride

One of my favorite aspects of this shoe is how lightweight it feels without compromising on protection or support. They don’t feel bulky, and the design supports a natural stride. The ride is smooth thanks to the rocker sole, which encourages forward motion and reduces strain on your calves and Achilles. For both walking and hiking, this results in less fatigue after big mileage days.

Ideal User

The Altra Experience Wild 2 is a suitable shoe for a wide range of hikers. If you’re new to trails, you’ll appreciate the forgiving fit and dependable traction. Seasoned hikers will like its lightweight feel and cushioning. It’s also a good option for anyone seeking a shoe that can handle off-road hiking duties as well as more urban walking.

Recommendation

The Altra Experience Wild 2 is a comfortable and versatile trail shoe featuring a roomy toe box, balanced protection, and good cushioning. Its roomy toe box allows for natural movement. Its outsole grips confidently on any terrain, and its lightweight build keeps your stride efficient over long distances. Whether you’re running, hiking, or just exploring new paths, the Altra Experience Wild 2 is a reliable trail companion that will keep your feet happy mile after mile.
