Alexander Volkanovski clarifies retirement fight idea with Justin Gaethje

Alexander Volkanovski continues to pitch a possible dream showdown with Justin Gaethje.

Volkanovski’s immediate attention will be on Saturday night given that he’s set to put his featherweight gold at stake against Movsar Evloev in the UFC 333 headliner. Still, “The Great” isn’t shy in suggesting a potential clash with Gaethje. He even said that the bout could be a retirement fight for both men, which drew some concern from fight fans.

Speaking to Farah Hannoun of MMAJunkie.com, Volkanovski clarified what he meant by the retirement idea.

“I even mentioned being like a retirement fight, and a lot of people are acting like I meant the next fight needs to be the retirement fight. It doesn’t,” Volkanovski said. “But at the same time, if that was offered to me, I go out there and do my thing and get my hand raised.

“I know Gaethje doesn’t really know what he wants to do. Well, maybe if you do one more, I can do that with you, and then we go out there, have our super fight, and then vacate the belts after and retire. The divisions can sort themselves out while we have our little fairytale super fight ending and sail off into the sunset.”

If Gaethje does indeed return to the Octagon, it won’t be until 2027. “The Highlight” suffered injuries to both his hands during a TKO finish over Ilia Topuria to become the undisputed UFC lightweight titleholder.

One problem with Volkanovski’s idea is that Arman Tsarukyan has long been considered to be the true No. 1 contender at 155 pounds. Having him wait much longer after his devastating knockout win over Mauricio Ruffy is sure to ruffle some feathers.

What do you think of Alexander Volkanovski’s idea for a clash with Justin Gaethje? Is it big enough to create a spark for MMA, or would it just hold up two divisions? Share your take in the comments below.
