T20 cricket has evolved into a format where explosive stroke-making, adaptability and consistency can define a batter’s reputation. With players across international cricket and franchise leagues continuing to push the boundaries, identifying the best performers in the shortest format remains a matter of debate. Former India batter Ajinkya Rahane has now shared his personal ranking of the five greatest batters in T20 cricket, placing a rising Indian star ahead of several established international names.

Rahane’s list features a combination of aggressive top-order batters and players known for their ability to dominate bowling attacks.

Ajinkya Rahane picks his top 5 greatest T20 batters

Rahane named Abhishek Sharma as his number one choice, highlighting the left-hander’s form, consistency, attacking intent and growing maturity over the past couple of years. Abhishek has built a reputation for taking on bowlers from the beginning of an innings, making his aggressive approach a defining feature of his batting. Rahane’s assessment suggests that the youngster’s development goes beyond his ability to score quickly, with his consistency and decision-making also contributing to his standing in the format.

“Number one Abhishek Sharma. Again his form his consistency his intent and I think the maturity which he has shown in last one two years, it’s amazing,” Rahane said on Cricbuzz.

South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen occupied the second position on Rahane’s list. The former India captain pointed to Klaasen’s development over the past three to five seasons and the danger he poses to opposition bowling attacks.

“Number two Klaasen (Heinrich Klaasen). Just last probably three four seasons five seasons how well he has developed his game in the in the format how dangerous he has become,” Rahane explained.

West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran was Rahane’s third choice. Praising the left-hander’s ability to attack different types of bowling, Rahane described him as a player capable of changing the course of a match at any moment.

“Number three is Nicholas Pooran. A left-hander dangerous against spinners fast bowlers can change the game any time,” Rahane revealed.

New Zealand’s Finn Allen featured at number four. Rahane called him a quality top-order batter and highlighted his dangerous approach. The two have also shared a dressing room, giving Rahane an opportunity to observe Allen’s qualities beyond his performances on the field.

“Number four for me Finn Allen. Again quality top order batter very dangerous. Have played with him great guy but very dangerous batter for me,” the former Indian opener asserted.

England’s Jos Buttler completed the top five at number five. Rahane praised Buttler as one of England’s greatest white-ball cricketers and recalled playing alongside him at Rajasthan Royals. Buttler currently represents Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.

“Number five for me Jos Buttler. Greatest white ball cricketer for for the England team. Played with him in the Rajasthan Royals. Now he’s with Gujarat Titans. Very dangerous,” Rahane added further.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli missing from the rankings

One notable aspect of Rahane’s selections was the absence of Indian stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both have made significant contributions to T20 cricket, although they have retired from T20 internationals and remain active in franchise competitions such as the IPL.

Rahane also left out legendary West Indies players Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard, whose impact on the format has been considerable.

His rankings ultimately reflect his personal assessment of the most dangerous and effective batters in contemporary T20 cricket, with Abhishek’s recent development earning him the top spot ahead of several established international stars.
