Devin Williams’ time as the Yankees’ closer appears to be on thin ice.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was noncommittal when asked about Williams’ hold on the closer role after he blew another save on Monday, surrendering a game-tying home run to the Rangers’ Joc Pederson

“We’ll talk about that,” Boone said in an appearance on Talkin’ Yanks on Tuesday. “It could look different all the time. Bottom line is I got to make decisions that are trying to put guys in the best position to be successful to win a ball game, and we’ll do what we need to do.”

Boone added that his new bullpen pieces, who each closed for other teams before the trade deadline, could be a part of the solution in The Bronx.

“I feel like we have the personnel to get that done at a really high level, but it’s gotta happen and it’s gotta be more consistent,” Boone continued.

Williams did not seem as concerned on Monday about his performance despite his second consecutive blown save, which marked the fifth time in his last seven appearances he has allowed at least one run.

“I felt great. It was just the one pitch that hurt me. Other than that, I executed my pitches,” Williams said after the game.

Williams was previously removed from the closer role earlier this year, as he lost the job to Luke Weaver.

Freshly acquired reliever David Bednar pitched the eighth inning on Monday and could be in line to be the closer if Williams is indeed removed from the role.

Bednar saved 17 games for the Pirates this season, pitching to a 2.37 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 38 innings.

Camillo Doval was also excellent for the Giants this year, with a 3.09 ERA and 15 saves for San Francisco, and could mix in as well.

Jake Bird, whom the Yankees acquired from the Rockies on deadline day, was optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday.
