Yankees manager Aaron Boone makes a pitching change in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, Monday, Oct. 5, 2026.
Charles Wenzelberg for New York Post
The easy choice is José Caballero for Ryan McMahon, a decision that already should have been made by Aaron Boone for Game 2.
Tougher is Anthony Volpe for Jazz Chisholm Jr. Tougher yet is Paul Goldschmidt for Luis García Jr.
Boone should make all of those alterations for Wednesday night’s do-or-die Game 3 for the Yankees.
Boone has generally tried to project steadiness and lack of panic in his nine years managing the Yankees. But if desperate times actually call for desperate actions, then Boone should manage desperately. He should manage like his job is on the line, whether Hal Steinbrenner or Brian Cashman would actually push that lever or not if the Yankees lose yet another postseason series, in part because of the type of sloppiness that historically has reflected poorly on a manager.
