Carlos Beltran is expected to be the favorite to land the New York Mets' managerial role in 2027.
He is currently serving in an advisory role in the Mets front office and would be taking over the dugout after former manager Carlos Mendoza was relieved of his duties in June.
He is a special assistant to the president of baseball operations (David Stearns) in the Mets front office. In this advisory role, he acts as a middleman between the front office and the clubhouse. His role also consists of mentoring younger players and prospects.
Following the dismissal of Mendoza, the Mets named vice president of player development Andy Green as the interim manager for the rest of the season, and he will then return to his front-office duties after this season.
Carlos Beltran's history with the Mets
The potential hiring of Beltran comes six years after he was initially hired to manage the Mets before the 2020 season. He stepped down by mutual agreement in January 2020 due to his lack of experience when it comes to managing a game.
Since joining the organization in 2023, Beltran has worked in close proximity with the front office, players and coaching staff on strategy, and he was recently elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame (HOF). He was elected to the HOF in his fourth year on the ballot, earning 84.2 percent of the votes.
Mets advisor J.D. Martinez sees becoming the next team manager as the "toughest job in baseball right now.''
While Beltran is currently the front-runner, former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora and former MVP Albert Pujols are also in the running for the Mets' manager role.
Cora has championship experience and a strong track record that makes him a prime candidate with his past ties to the franchise. But Pujols has also expressed interest in managing the Mets. He would gain immense respect from the players as he recently managed the Dominican Republic's team in the World Baseball Classic.
