The Philadelphia 76ers are exploring trade options for Johni Broome as they look to create roster flexibility for the addition of veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Keith Smith reported on Sunday that the Sixers have been searching for a trade involving Broome and could consider waiving and stretching his contract if no deal materializes. Philadelphia has until Caldwell-Pope clears waivers to finalize a move that would open the necessary roster and financial space.

Broome, 24, is entering the second season of a four-year, $3.4 million rookie-scale contract. The former Auburn standout joined Philadelphia after the team selected him at No. 35 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft and spent most of the 2025-26 season outside the rotation.

In 11 games with the 76ers last season, Broome averaged 0.9 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.4 assists in 5.0 minutes per game. He shot 16.7% from the field and went 0-for-5 from three-point range during limited NBA action.

Philadelphia’s decision comes as the franchise continues reshaping its roster after an aggressive offseason. New president of basketball operations Mike Gansey has transformed the team into a championship contender by acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics and adding LeBron James to a core featuring Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

The Sixers entered the offseason after finishing the 2025-26 regular season 45-37, earning the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. They defeated the Boston Celtics in a seven-game first-round series before being swept by the New York Knicks in the conference semifinals.

With their new roster construction, Philadelphia has prioritized experienced contributors who can help immediately around its stars. The team added Dean Wade on a four-year, $39 million contract, Anfernee Simons on a two-year, $12.3 million deal, and several depth pieces, increasing competition for available roster spots.

Broome’s contract represents a small financial commitment, but moving his salary would give Philadelphia additional flexibility as it completes offseason moves. A stretch provision would allow the team to spread his remaining salary over multiple seasons if a trade cannot be found.

The Sixers already have several frontcourt options, including Embiid, Adem Bona and newly signed Ariel Hukporti. Bona played 71 games during the 2025-26 season, averaging 4.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 17.4 minutes per game.

Caldwell-Pope would add another established perimeter defender and shooter to a roster built around star offensive creators. The 34-year-old guard has spent his career as a reliable three-and-D option, winning championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 and the Denver Nuggets in 2023.
