If you’ve ever found yourself yearning to drop into Downward-Facing Dog in the middle of the grocery store, you know the lure of the out-of-place yoga pose. But the easiest (and perhaps least obtrusive) way to build yoga into your life in the wild is through a selection of subtle, yet essential, standing yoga poses.
Finding moments to practice a pose here and there throughout the day benefits your life and practice in more ways than one. First, it transmutes the mundane—standing in line, running errands, waiting for public transit—into an opportunity to be a little playful as you stretch and strengthen your body, bring your muscles and breath onboard, and invite more presence into your life.
Also, if your goal is to develop a more sustained practice, research shows that confidence-building, commitment, and behavioral flexibility all serve to support the building and maintenance of physical habits. So, if you can promise to get yourself into Tree Pose everyday, regardless of circumstance, you could be one step closer to the yogi life of your dreams.
These standing yoga poses encourage you build mindful movement into your routine—and, we promise, without eliciting eye-rolls from everyone around you.
5 Standing Yoga Poses to Try in the Wild
Yoga extends well beyond your mat in terms of spirituality, philosophy, and the quality of your breath and movement. Incorporating these standing yoga poses into your everyday adventures through the world reminds you that your practice can extend well beyond the studio walls.
1. Mountain Pose
(Photo: Andrew Clark)If you find yourself executing regular posture checks while standing still, you’re probably already hitting Mountain Pose throughout your day. This deceptively simple pose is a cornerstone of yoga and asks that you find length and alignment through your entire body. Next time you’re chilling upright for a significant amount of time (hello, standing in line at the store), spend some (or all) of it in Mountain.
2. Tree Pose
(Photo: Andrew Clark)Standing, but on one leg! Tree Pose is one of those shapes that you might already strike subconsciously while standing for extended periods of time, whether you’re at the kitchen sink or a standing work desk. Variations of Tree include placing your foot against the inside of your ankle, knee, or thigh, allowing for a super subtle balancing act that can be explored whenever the urge occurs.
3. Eagle Arms
(Photo: Andrew Clark)We’ll be honest: coming into full Eagle Pose in public would be a bit conspicuous. If the full-body twist feels a little extra to try in the wild, why not opt for arms alone? Crossing your arms in front of your face—so that the elbow of one sits in the crook of the other—is a movement that’s understated enough to pass as a spontaneous stretch but with tech-hunch-combatting benefits. Your tight upper arms and shoulder will thank you.
4. Standing Forward Bend
(Photo: Andrew Clark)Bending over is an environmentally specific movement—not something you’re likely to do while in a crowd or standing in line. Still, the urge to hinge at the hips and let your torso hang toward the ground feels fairly universal, which is why Standing Forward Bend deserves a place on this list. Whether you’re mid-stroll, hiking, picnicking in the park, or waiting for a barista to call your coffee order, taking a (tasteful) moment to reach toward your toes stretches your back, hamstrings, and more for full-body relief. Don’t forget to relax your neck and let your head hang.
5. Upward Salute
(Photo: Andrew Clark)Extending your arms toward the sky is generally a sign of devotion or celebration, which makes Upward Salute a safe yoga pose to enjoy in public. Consider this pose a natural extension of Mountain, with your hands reaching purposefully overhead. The shape is liberating and invites energy to flow through your body, and everyone nearby will simply think you’re having a particularly excellent day.
